Metro & Subways in our daily life

The oldest metro line in Istanbul is the Tünel, which started operating on January 17, 1875. It is the second-oldest metro line in the world after the London Underground of 1863 and the first in continental Europe.

Construction of the modern metro began in 1989. The M1 metro line was formerly known as the Light Rail System. In 2002, it was extended from Aksaray to the western suburbs connecting Atatürk International Airport in the southwest. Construction of the M2 began on September 11, 1992, but due to archaeological finds, the construction of many stations, in particular, had to be halted.

The city of Istanbul is located near the North Anatolian Fault, a seismic zone that has caused many natural disasters in the city. To be prepared against these natural disasters, the Istanbul subway was built with an architectural method called cut-and-cover, which can withstand a magnitude 9.0 earthquake. In this method, a structural pipe is placed in the soft or submerged ground and covered with a special coating that insulates it from water.

Istanbul has four metro lines serving 58 stations. The metro service is supplemented by stations connected by streetcars and cable cars.

The impressive underwater subway connecting Asia and Europe: Marmaray

Marmaray is one of the most impressive transportation projects in the history of mankind. It is a 13.6-kilometer tunnel 62 meters deep in the sea, built-in one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world.

Subway that changes everyday life

The subway has profoundly changed the customs and economic life of the entire city. Living near the subway adds value to homes and has made many people give up their cars. The metro has had a significant impact on vehicle traffic.

The efficiency and cleanliness of the metro lines are especially appreciated by customers.

Subway can effectively contribute to the achievement of all the objectives of an urban development policy. It improves the efficiency of the urban economy by reducing travel costs and generating more activity in the city center. Because the cost of the metro is affordable, it can be used by all as a primary means of transportation. It can also increase sustainability by encouraging a voluntary reduction in-car use and, in the medium term, a more environmentally friendly land use pattern.

A real alternative to cars

As for the impact of metro line extensions on the demand for public and private transport services in cities, the results show that this transport alternative has generally succeeded in reducing the gradual increase in car use despite higher investment and capital costs.

Metro equipment

Metro staff are not only responsible for tunnels, traffic management, or stations. For the service to be perfect, the trains must also be in perfect condition. In the workshops, all maintenance work on the vehicles, from cleaning to major repairs, is carried out by means of regular inspections.

Timely fault detection and periodic maintenance are essential in the railway industry to avoid accidents. The practice of condition-based maintenance can significantly improve the reliability, safety, and efficiency of a railway system while reducing maintenance costs.

Today, the rapid development of technology and computer systems is accompanied by the desire to achieve shorter and safer journeys, with the greatest possible comfort and efficiency. Csr Bombardier gearboxes, Quartax pins, train couplings, train buffers, bogie overhauls, axle overhauls, rail grinding, rail welding, bushing welding, scissor lift grinding, ballast laying, among the projects and equipment we manage as Alermak and in which we have experience, vehicle safety and comfort are essential elements. In this way, we can professionally avoid situations that could cause serious problems, while preventing an unexpected breakdown.
